It is quite possible from a comprehensive reading of the scriptures to know what God wants from us. In the Old Testament God repeats the instruction, “Go forth and be fruitful” time and time again. To Adam he says, “fill the earth and subdue it” To Abraham, “This is my covenant… keep my covenant for generations to come.” The original message was clear: populate the earth with law abiding men and women. The original covenant was an agreement between God and man that in return for keeping certain inviolable laws, God would make Abraham’s descendants prosperous and fruitful.

The history of the Israelites and the story of the Old Testament is a history of failure to comply with this original agreement between God and man. There was a straightforward relationship between obedience and earthly success.

With Jesus, the old covenant was superceded by a new agreement. Jesus went to the cross to take responsibility for all the iniquities of men. This is a supreme example of self-sacrifice, the innocent son of God dying in exchange for God’s unfailing grace on humanity for evermore. The apostle Paul took this to mean that man was free from any obligation to God as long as he repented his sins and became reborn in Jesus. A new era of freedom was heralded. Adam in the garden of Eden had been given free will; this was restored to man with the death of Christ.

The same inviolable laws underlay our behaviour as ever, a moral obligation to do what is right and good, but now the prize is spiritual redemption. Our reward is the Eternal City and Eternal Salvation, and everyone, not just the Jews, has the opportunity of entry. Where Abraham’s mission was to populate the earth with righteous people, the purpose of Christ’s church is to populate heaven with righteous souls. This is God’s will for us. Regardless of how we behave as individuals, this ultimate goal will come about eventually. But by listening to His voice in our hearts, implementing His will in our chosen careers, we can hasten the joyful conclusion.
