Exhibition Stand Contractors – Key Facts

There are three types of exhibition stand contractors: – those that actually build stands, those that resell modular exhibition stands and those that pretend to be stand contractors but that are actually just Printers who print the graphics for Pop Up stands.

Those that actually build stands are called Custom Build exhibition contractors, those that sell modular stands and install them at your exhibition are called exhibition stand contractors and those that sell Pop Up stands without installation are called all sorts of things by the other two!

Custom Build manufacturers (also called Bespoke Stand Manufacturers) are at the top end of food chain as far as the Exhibition Industry is concerned. They have the ability and know-how to produce any type of stand to the customers specification or to come up with ideas that would fit the clients brief and budget.

It is not uncommon to find that Custom Build stand companies also offer Modular and Pop Up stands as today’s Pop Up stand buyer is tomorrow’s custom build customer.

Modular exhibition stand contractors may well have a stock of modular exhibition stands in a warehouse somewhere and will either offer to make them into a stand at your particular show (i.e. rent the structure to you)  or they will have a direct link to the people who actually manufacture the stand in order for you to buy the structure once they have a) made it fit your stand shape and size and b) added the important graphics for the structure. They will then put the whole package together and sell it to you with the cost of installation and derig (dismantle) as part of the overall price.

One thing to mention at this point is that it is vital for you to check that the quote you obtain includes installation, removal and storage of the stand (with graphics) until the next show rolls around as well as to get the cost of installation at the next show. They will not need to include the cost of the graphics at the next show of course but don’t think that will necessarily bring the price down.

Another thing to look out for is that ALL of the costs are in the quote. For instance, many exhibition stand contractors will include installation at the venue but then may charge you for transportation costs TO the venue at a later date. Others will include lighting as part of the package you are buying into but won’t include the cost of the electricity to power those lights (which they will say is an additional cost as they don’t have any say over it because it’s supplied by the venue). This is not true as the costs can easily be obtained by the venue, matched up to the electrical requirements on the stand (by them) to arrive at a figure that they can include in the proposal.

Pop Up Stands. These are the backdrops you see within the cubicles (Shell Schemes) at exhibitions. They are mass produced in China, shipped over to the UK in vast quantities and Printers are able to offer them with your artwork on the front for very low prices. They will get you through the show but it’s unlikely that the basic, 3 drop ones will ever get you noticed.
