I’ve got a website with Google AdSense activated and a big honking banner (I’m sure they would call it “a discrete Image”) running down the right side of my home page. I’ve tried everything I know to get the AdSense people to replace it with print ads, but they don’t seem to be listening; I can only hope they get to it sooner or later. Now I don’t care about the advertising – I welcome it; after all, advertising money is the lifeblood of the Internet–what annoys me is that nobody has ever clicked on the thing and I don’t believe anybody ever will.

Actually, as banners go it isn’t all that bad; it doesn’t flash on and off so much as drift in and out of focus. At first it didn’t bother me at all, but as time passed and nobody went near it, I decided to do some research. What I discovered was, duh, that people hate banners. For that matter, they hate anything that has to do with advertising. But banners come in for special negative attention–or, as is usually the case, no attention at all. Maybe people identify banners with pop-ups, and pop-ups must easily be the most hated advertising method on the Internet.

I believe that this dislike means that people not only ignore the information found on a banner, their subconscious keeps them from seeing it. Psychologists have known for years that people can look right at something they don’t want to see and never remember seeing it.

Studies have shown that people will so assiduously avoid looking at anything they identify as advertising that they will mistake the big buy-button on an e-commerce shopping cart for an ad banner and complain to the site’s support group because they can’t consummate the sale. In fact, these same studies indicate that people will avoid looking–much less clicking–on anything bright and shiny that even reminds them of an add. That fact must cause knowledgeable website designers more than a few sleepless nights trying to figure out how to make a site both attractive and effective.
